A wordless day with General Tso’s

general tso's

…on a bed of crunchy noodles. Ever wonder why this popular and listed as chef’s specialty Chinese dish is called General Tso’s chicken? One theory says that it was named after the Hunan general because it was invented by his wife as she serves this sweet and spicy dish to him and his officers after every military victory. On the other hand, as Hunan cuisine is traditionally very spicy and rarely sweet, the dish is also believed to have been introduced to New York City in the early 1970’s as an example of Hunan and Szechuan-style cooking.

I first learned about the delicious chicken dish when we came to …where else New York, almost 5 years ago and from then on, had it almost every time we order in a Chinese restaurant even as we moved here in Massachusetts. Such that when I have friends and relatives visiting from the Philippines, it is always part of my welcome dinner or lunch. Since my mom is the most frequent person visiting us, she would now tease me saying, “Genereal Tso’s again?” hahaha! Now I am thinking I am ordering this again one week from now when she comes for another visit together this time with my sister and her family!

This is an entry for Wordless Wednesday.

I like that dish too. Good shot but it makes me hungry. You asked how I got the shot of the webs on my site. It was basically luck. I happened to look up on a walk and the light cooperated with me. Thanks for visiting.

Looks good to me. I love both Hunan and Szechuan cuisine. Fortunately both are easy to find here in Hawaii. Happy WW (and Gen. Tso Day).

From what I’ve heard about General Tso is that this dish was invented in Taiwan from a chef who immigrated from China during the tough times. The people kept a lot of the traditions from the mainland. The chef wanted to create a dish that was in honor of the General Tso. However, that dish is not really the general Tso’s chicken as we know it. The current version was adopted when a chef brought it stateside (not sure if it was NY or San Fran) but it was made to suit the American palette.
