Lasang Pinoy, Sundays Week #5: SOUR

SUMMER and something SOUR…does that make sense? For me it does! Summer afternoons when I was young would mean mangoes of all varieties but most especially Indian mangoes and other tropical fruits overflowing in the house. Sad to say though, it would take a bit of an effort to satisfy our craving for this particular fruit here in the United States unless you are one of the very lucky few who live nearby a Filipino store or a larger scale Asian Supermarket.

lemon

This is the reason why I have LEMONS! I haven’t had a taste of our Philippine mangoes here in Massachusetts so far and I have learned to settle for the Mexican or Thai variety which is not the same but will do…

LEMON is used for both culinary and non-culinary purposes all around the world. This citrus fruit is used primarily for its juice, though the pulp and zest are also utilized, particularly in cooking, marinating and even baking. Whether it ’s a lemonade or as a garnish for savory dishes, a neutralizer when marinating fish and other meats, lemon-flavored dishes and drinks that are often served with a wedge or slice of lemon in the glass or on the rim, or used to flavor iced tea, mixed drinks and even soft drinks and water as well as a marmalade and liqueur a.k.a the Limoncello, the tart fruit adds flavor and zest one way or another to any drink, dish or baked goodies.

Guess what this is…

This is Lasang Pinoy, Sundays’ theme for the week of July 13-19, anything SOUR! It could be a fruit, drink, dish flavored with souring agent, a dip, marmalade, cake, pastry and even a photo of a microplane grater or zester! They are all welcome here! Come and join us and let those faces start squirming!
