rice to the challenge

no, this is not a very late entry to the previously concluded Lasang Pinoy event…this is a resolution. why?
it’s time to go on a diet…a serious one at that and tighten our budget at the same time! what with the soaring high prices of rice all around these days most especially here in the US? imagine being faced with a $20 worth of Thai rice instead of the already expensive $9 per sack a few weeks ago? What would one do? As for our case, we opted to buy the cheapest one around at $15. now, we are faced with another challenge. we can’t eat it! this cheapy cheapy kind is the one that takes forever to cook, and if you like your rice malata [soft]as i do, this will make you wish you had something buhaghag[spongy or loose] instead. this is waaaay too malata[as in soggy soft!] when cooked [that is if you get lucky]!
this is why we came to the conclusion that…we had to buy another sack:) yes, instead of saving [in a way], now we had to spend more! and what does one do with this kind of situation?
make loads and loads of Arroz Caldo! next stop….paella, lugaw. any other suggestions?

Ces, even here in the Mid East the cost of rice has more than doubled. The global food crisis is really affecting all of us. In some ways, it is good that even if prices go up we can still manage to buy food even if we have to tighten our budget. Because I heard in BBC news that so many people are really suffering because of this crisis.
The stock of Thai Jasmine rice here was also depleted for a time so we ended up buying the parboiled (?) rice. I did not like it. Mas mahirap lutuin at hindi ganon ka sarap – like the Basmati rice, which we also bought before.
Buti na lang eh may stock ulit ng rice that I am used to eating. Yum (kahit mahal)!

good for you:) we don’t have that luxury here…thing is, now we have no other choice but to buy what’s left since most rice eating people around have hoarded the good ones!
